1975 Chevrolet Chevelle
The Chevelle was Chevrolet’s entry into the “intermediate” segment, and was manufactured from 1964 through 1977. The 1964-’65 cars were very similar, likewise with the 1966-’67 models. 1968-’72 Chevelles are close in size and shape, and many parts over this five model year run are interchangeable. 1973-77 Chevelles were sold on style with the new emissions and safety regulations in place.
What GM considered European was introduced with the all-new 1973 Chevelle; the most radical redesign since its inception in 1964. 5-mph crash standards dictated the massive bumpers, with roll-over standards eliminating hardtops for the “Colonnade” roof design incorporating a structurally superior B-pillar. Large opera glass side window blended into the “fast-back-esque” rear window. The short deck lid rolls down to an equally boxy bumper. Minor style changes in 1974 with a new grille, bumper and taillights.
The 350ci V-8 option had a lowered compression to pass more stringent emissions standards resulting in 175bhp. Besides government regulations taking effect, the first Middle-East oil embargo more than doubled gas prices, with shortages resulting in long lines at the gas pumps to fill your 22-gallon tank.
A more aerodynamic, flexible front end distinguished the S-3 Laguna from the 1974 S-3, which was adopted for NASCAR Chevelles. Slight changes to trim were made from 1975 through 1977.
Chevrolet produced just over 280,000 Chevelles in 1975.
